The firm started in 2003, when three litigation partners of an elite Texas law firm pursued their vision for a new firm.
VB is devoted exclusively to the handling of complex business and specialty litigation—the tough ones. The firm’s office is located in Austin, Texas, but most of its cases are not in Austin. For specialty cases in particular, VB attorneys handle cases throughout Texas and beyond. The firm has never lost sight of its five deeply-held, core values: Excellence, Client Service, Professional Service and Recognition, Community Service and Mutual Respect.
Excellence
Excellence starts with a simple charge: “Hire the best and the brightest.” For clients facing complex litigation issues, nothing beats having the smartest, most creative legal talent available. More often than not, those are the lawyers who understand the issues and creatively chart a way to achieve a desired result most efficiently. VB does not hire average lawyers. It attracts and retains top legal talent by providing compensation commensurate with their skills and by providing an environment focused on shared core values. From coveted judicial clerkships to serving on editorial boards, for VB attorneys, legal excellence has always been a hallmark of their careers.
Client Service
VB recognizes that law is a service business. Clients rightfully demand results. But they also demand efficiency and a clear strategy toward a stated goal. VB is proud of the results it achieves for clients, as well as the manner in which it serves clients. Whether it is a multi-national computer company in major litigation against the State of Texas, a major insurance carrier in multi-million dollar bad faith suits by policyholders, a local liberal arts university in challenges to its actions, or a physicians group fighting an antitrust challenge to its operations, all of these clients have turned to VB because of the skill of its trial attorneys and the efficient and clear manner in which the service is delivered.
VB has developed a reputation for handling the tough, non-routine cases — “when litigation matters.” It is a reputation the firm relishes.
Professional Service and Recognition
There are few higher accolades than recognition by peers. VB lawyers are active in their profession and continue to be honored with leadership positions. From serving as President-Elect of the Austin Federal Bar Association to being sought after continuing education speakers, VB attorneys have been active at the local, state and national levels.
Community Service
VB encourages its lawyers and staff to honor their community in ways they choose. But encouragement is hardly necessary. At the first anniversary of VB, the lawyers and staff voted to make a contribution to a local charity rather than lavish money on a party for themselves. And, VB attorneys bring their legal talent to bear. For his work in defending constitutional attacks to the State of Texas’ system for funding community legal service organizations, Britt Buchanan received the Edmund S. Muskie Pro Bono Service Award from the Tort and Insurance Section of the ABA.
Mutual Respect
Finally, VB believes that lawyers achieve better results in a professional environment where competition is reserved for the outside world. The lawyers and staff of VB enjoy each other’s company, share in each others triumphs and failures and readily consider clients as extensions of the VB family. From the way the firm handles its internal affairs to the way it approaches each matter, internal competition is viewed as contrary to the principles of excellence and client service.
